Makna Hijrah dalam Caption Instagram: Analisis Dramaturgi antara Ekspresi Spiritual dan Pencitraan Diri

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing use of the term hijrah in Instagram captions, which indicates a shift in meaning from a personal spiritual concept to a public expression in the digital space. This study aims to analyze how the meaning of hijrah is constructed on the Instagram platform and to reveal the relationship between spiritual expression and self-image. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical type. Data were collected through non-participant observation and documentation of Instagram captions containing hijrah narratives, and were supported by a literature review of journal articles published in the last five years. The data were analyzed using discourse analysis with Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory approach to identify front-stage and back-stage representations. The results show that the meaning of hijrah in Instagram captions is formed through two main tendencies, namely as a spiritual expression that reflects self-reflection and closeness to God, and as a self-image strategy through impression management in the digital public space. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that hijrah on social media is understood not only as a process of religious transformation but also as a social practice involving negotiation between religious values and the need for public recognition. The implications of this study contribute to the development of the sociology of religion, particularly regarding digital religiosity and the representation of religious identity on social media.
